Psychology
Who we are?

Our purpose is not to prove that your pain is "all in the mind." Rather, it is to help you build effective coping skills so that you can enjoy a good quality of life. We can help separate your anxiety from the pain, so you no longer have to go through the emotional ups and downs. We will help you to…
• feel better
• conquer pain
• to lead a productive life

How can we help?

Managing your pain is all about rebuilding a good quality of life and this may involve setting goals which are important to you, such as spending more time with family and friends or becoming fitter. Pain experiences can include anxiety, mood upheaval, stress, anger, relationship difficulties, changing of family roles, inactivity, negative thinking, and many other challenging emotions and behaviours. We address these issues thoroughly.

What could we do for managing your pain?

Your pain management therapy begins with an assessment to understand your pain problems and needs. A therapy plan is outlined using the cognitive behavioural therapy model (CBT) but may also include other therapeutic approaches e.g. mindfulness, visualization or guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, and activity pacing.

Sessions aim to provide a balance between therapeutic discussion and goal focused work to build on your pain management strategies. Therapy may take place alongside medical treatments but is not a substitute for such treatments.

Shambhala

(In Sanskrit: Swayam + bhala – Self-benefited; Swayam + bala – Self-empowered)
A Buddhist Pure Land of peace, tranquility and happiness, where all inhabitants are enlightened

Shambhala – our inter-disciplinary pain management programme is the first of its kind in South Asia. Nobody knows your pains as well as you do, not even the finest doctors in the world, because pain is an incredibly personal experience. It is your personal expertise in pain that will be the basis for Shambhala. It will help us design a plan to manage your pain, which will be as unique as you are.

The emphasis on physical and psychological optimisation, a core component of Shambhala, can be traced at least as far back as Aristotle's concept of eudaimonia. The theory that the goal of individual life is to achieve happiness by fulfilling one's potential. Shambhala calls for as much focus on strength as on weakness, as much interest in building the best things in life as in repairing the worst, and as much concern with fulfilling the lives of otherwise healthy people as healing the wounds of the distressed.

Major Goals of Shambhala

• To return you to productivity
• To maximise your function, thus minimising your pain
• To reduce or minimise future medical expenses
• To help you avoid dependence on medications
• To help you avoid recurrence of injury
• To help you maintain the treatment gains
• To provide you with tools and strategies to self-manage your pain

Shambhala emphasises an active self-management approach, and you are encouraged to bring along a family member or friend.
